The mood

The pool has closed for the day. An empty diving board cuts across a muted blue spread, lane ropes rest in faded red loops, and a violet locker key sits beside the caption. Paper Deck creates a quiet magazine sheet while Closing Blue carries the illustrated water and evening air.

Key Number gives the short timeline and numbered detail a firm visual stop. Lane Red forms the pull-quote panel and rope illustration, connecting the written essay to the folded equipment.

How to use it

Use Closing Blue for the full spread and Deep Caption for the title, deck labels, and image captions. Place the essay body on Paper Deck. Use Key Number for the timeline rail, locker-key number, and page marker, then reserve Lane Red for the pull-quote panel, lane-rope strokes, and one divider. Set the quote text in Deep Caption on Lane Red and use Paper Deck for wording inside Key Number blocks.

Start with a 54/34/12 surface balance across Closing Blue, Paper Deck, and Key Number. Treat Lane Red as a narrow accent outside that ratio. Keep captions attached to their illustrations, label each timeline entry in sequence, and repeat numbered references in text rather than relying on color.

What to watch

Deep Caption measures 6.53:1 on Closing Blue, 13.62:1 on Paper Deck, and 5.92:1 on Lane Red, passing the 4.5:1 normal-text threshold. On Key Number it measures only 1.53:1 and fails both 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. Use Paper Deck on Key Number instead; that pairing measures 8.88:1.

Paper Deck against Closing Blue measures 2.09:1, and Lane Red against Closing Blue measures 1.10:1. Both fail the 3:1 non-text threshold when a panel or pull-quote boundary matters. Outline either component in Deep Caption, which reaches at least 5.92:1 against the component and 6.53:1 against the blue field. Key Number against Closing Blue reaches 4.26:1 and can define the timeline rail.

A considered balance

Make room for
the right colors.

Use Closing Blue for the spread, Deep Caption for headings and captions, Paper Deck for essay text, Key Number for the timeline and locker key, and Lane Red for the pull-quote panel and rope illustration. Set quote text in Deep Caption on Lane Red and block labels in Paper Deck on Key Number. Keep captions beside images, label timeline entries, and outline pale or red panels in Deep Caption when their edges matter.

Start with a generous background, introduce your primary color, then use the highlight sparingly. The ratios are a guide for large surfaces, not a fixed recipe.

Text on background
6.53:1 #202224 on #8FA9BE · AA normal text
Text on primary
13.62:1 #202224 on #EEEDE8 · AAA normal text
Text on highlight
1.53:1 #202224 on #4E365F · Not suitable for text

The original text has low contrast (1.53:1). This example uses Paper Deck (#EEEDE8) from the same palette instead of #202224 on #4E365F, improving contrast to 8.88:1. This meets WCAG AA for normal text.

Text on accent
5.92:1 #202224 on #B89598 · AA normal text

Contrast is calculated for these specific pairs. Large text means at least 24 px regular or about 18.7 px bold. Check every pairing in your final design.

COLOR NOTE

Deep Caption on Key Number is 1.53:1 and fails the 4.5:1 normal-text and 3:1 large-text thresholds; use Paper Deck at 8.88:1. Paper Deck and Lane Red panels need a Deep Caption outline against Closing Blue when their boundaries carry meaning.

Text/background contrast: 6.53:1. This is one measured pair, not a guarantee for the whole palette. Check every actual text/background pairing against WCAG AA. Prefer readable combinations from the original colors, keep visible keyboard focus, and never communicate state through color alone. If no original pairing meets the requirement, propose a separately labeled derived color with its original HEX, proposed HEX, purpose and measured contrast. Never overwrite the source palette.

This guide preserves the original HEX values. Review the output before using it.
