The mood

A near-black ledger frame makes pale sage and cool gray feel quiet and methodical. Deep green identifies one chosen interval without turning the dashboard into a row of competing status colors.

How to use it

Use Ledger Charcoal for the dashboard shell with Paper White headings and navigation at 14.67:1. Period summaries sit on Sage Sheet with Ledger Charcoal labels at 10.99:1. Place the chosen interval inside those sage summaries as a Deep Ledger strip with Paper White text at 8.12:1, a hatch pattern, and the words “Selected interval.” Sage provides a valid edge around that strip at 6.08:1 and separates from the charcoal shell at 10.99:1.

Annotation Gray carries note lines, callouts, and compact legends with Ledger Charcoal text at 10.20:1. Its boundary with the charcoal shell is equally clear at 10.20:1, so it needs no extra colored frame. Divide visible surfaces into 48% charcoal, 34% sage, and 18% gray; reserve deep green for the selected interval and small annotation anchors inside sage. Use named periods and patterned marks rather than color-only good or bad states.

What to watch

Paper White fails for small text on Sage Sheet at 1.34:1 and Annotation Gray at 1.44:1, so both light surfaces require Ledger Charcoal text. Deep Ledger and Ledger Charcoal are only 1.81:1 apart; never place the green selection directly on the dark shell. Sage and gray are just 1.08:1 apart and must not form an unlabeled boundary.

A considered balance

Make room for
the right colors.

Build a fictional building-use ledger on Ledger Charcoal with Paper White headings. Place period summaries on Sage Sheet and annotations on Annotation Gray using charcoal text. Set the selected interval as a Deep Ledger strip inside sage, with white text, a hatch pattern, and a visible label.

Start with a generous background, introduce your primary color, then use the highlight sparingly. The ratios are a guide for large surfaces, not a fixed recipe.

Background · Primary · Highlight. Use text and accent colors where their roles call for them.

Text on background
14.67:1 #F1F3EF on #1E201F · AAA normal text
Text on primary
1.34:1 #F1F3EF on #C9D8C2 · Not suitable for text

The original text has low contrast (1.34:1). This example uses Ledger Charcoal (#1E201F) from the same palette instead of #F1F3EF on #C9D8C2, improving contrast to 10.99:1. This meets WCAG AA for normal text.

Text on highlight
1.44:1 #F1F3EF on #C7CDD0 · Not suitable for text

The original text has low contrast (1.44:1). This example uses Ledger Charcoal (#1E201F) from the same palette instead of #F1F3EF on #C7CDD0, improving contrast to 10.20:1. This meets WCAG AA for normal text.

Text on accent
8.12:1 #F1F3EF on #24513B · AAA normal text

Contrast is calculated for these specific pairs. Large text means at least 24 px regular or about 18.7 px bold. Check every pairing in your final design.

COLOR NOTE

Use Paper White on Ledger Charcoal at 14.67:1 and Deep Ledger at 8.12:1. Use Ledger Charcoal text on Sage Sheet at 10.99:1 and Annotation Gray at 10.20:1. Keep Deep Ledger inside Sage Sheet because green and charcoal reach only 1.81:1.

Mood: A quiet charcoal ledger organized with pale sage, cool gray, and one deep-green selection
Suggested uses: Data dashboards
Application note: Build a fictional building-use ledger on Ledger Charcoal with Paper White headings. Place period summaries on Sage Sheet and annotations on Annotation Gray using charcoal text. Set the selected interval as a Deep Ledger strip inside sage, with white text, a hatch pattern, and a visible label.
Avoid: Use Paper White on Ledger Charcoal at 14.67:1 and Deep Ledger at 8.12:1. Use Ledger Charcoal text on Sage Sheet at 10.99:1 and Annotation Gray at 10.20:1. Keep Deep Ledger inside Sage Sheet because green and charcoal reach only 1.81:1.
Use approximately 48% background, 34% primary, and 18% highlight across large surfaces. These ratios are a starting point, not a rigid rule. Use text and accent colors according to their roles.

Keep the original HEX values. Choose readable text/background pairings without silently changing the palette. Do not introduce unrelated colors.

Text/background contrast: 14.67:1. This is one measured pair, not a guarantee for the whole palette. Check every actual text/background pairing against WCAG AA. Prefer readable combinations from the original colors, keep visible keyboard focus, and never communicate state through color alone. If no original pairing meets the requirement, propose a separately labeled derived color with its original HEX, proposed HEX, purpose and measured contrast. Never overwrite the source palette.

This guide preserves the original HEX values. Review the output before using it.
