The mood

A circular aperture cuts through a dark greenhouse-red wall and reveals one numbered seed specimen. Specimen Cyan forms the measured rim, while Archive Violet gives the selected record a pale field inside the opening.

Leaf Caption carries the title and specimen number across the darker surfaces. Notes Ochre becomes a narrow caption rail for what remains beyond the frame, with Specimen, Frame, and Notes written beside their numbers and borders.

How to use it

Use Greenhouse Red for the editorial background with Leaf Caption for the opener title and frame labels. Build the primary aperture rim in Specimen Cyan with Leaf Caption text.

Treat Archive Violet as the pale specimen-card highlight with Greenhouse Red text. Use Notes Ochre for the dark caption rail with Leaf Caption text. The 60/27/13 ratio means 60% Greenhouse Red background, 27% Specimen Cyan primary rim, and 13% Archive Violet highlight; Notes Ochre remains a narrow accent outside the surface split.

What to watch

Leaf Caption reaches 11.37:1 on Greenhouse Red, 5.03:1 on Specimen Cyan, and 8.42:1 on Notes Ochre. It reaches only 1.13:1 on Archive Violet, so that pairing fails normal- and large-text AA. Use Greenhouse Red on Archive Violet instead at 10.03:1.

Keep the aperture circular, the caption rail narrow, and all essential text on the original solid, full-opacity colors. Pair Specimen, Frame, and Notes with written labels and geometric borders.

A considered balance

Make room for
the right colors.

Use Greenhouse Red as the editorial field with Leaf Caption text. Build Specimen Cyan as the aperture rim with Leaf Caption, set Archive Violet as the pale specimen card with Greenhouse Red text, and keep Notes Ochre to a narrow rail with Leaf Caption. Preserve the original solid, full-opacity HEX colors and a 60/27/13 background-primary-highlight surface ratio.

Start with a generous background, introduce your primary color, then use the highlight sparingly. The ratios are a guide for large surfaces, not a fixed recipe.

Background · Primary · Highlight. Use text and accent colors where their roles call for them.

Text on background
11.37:1 #D8E8C2 on #4A1621 · AAA normal text
Text on primary
5.03:1 #D8E8C2 on #2B666E · AA normal text
Text on highlight
1.13:1 #D8E8C2 on #DED0EA · Not suitable for text

The original text has low contrast (1.13:1). This example uses Greenhouse Red (#4A1621) from the same palette instead of #D8E8C2 on #DED0EA, improving contrast to 10.03:1. This meets WCAG AA for normal text.

Text on accent
8.42:1 #D8E8C2 on #4A3B16 · AAA normal text

Contrast is calculated for these specific pairs. Large text means at least 24 px regular or about 18.7 px bold. Check every pairing in your final design.

Text/background contrast: 11.37:1. This is one measured pair, not a guarantee for the whole palette. Check every actual text/background pairing against WCAG AA. Prefer readable combinations from the original colors, keep visible keyboard focus, and never communicate state through color alone. If no original pairing meets the requirement, propose a separately labeled derived color with its original HEX, proposed HEX, purpose and measured contrast. Never overwrite the source palette.

This guide preserves the original HEX values. Review the output before using it.
