The Last Proof Moves

Test in Color Lab

Five colors, endless possibilities. Select a color to copy its HEX.

A print-workshop shift board pairs dark violet type with green job strips, gray paper bins, and pale cyan time details on a clean neutral work surface.

The feeling

A precise shift board built from press green, paper gray, pale cyan, and violet ink.

The mood

Imagine the press room quieting at the end of a shift while one final proof card moves across the board. Ink Violet supplies the measured lettering, Press Green turns each job strip into a clear unit, and Stack Gray echoes the squared silhouettes of paper waiting beside the machine.

How to use it

Use Workshop Sheet across 50% of the board for open lanes and the page frame. Give 30% to Press Green for job strips moving through Queued, Proof Review, and Ready, and 20% to Stack Gray for paper-bin panels and the handoff summary. Set Ink Violet type on every surface: it reaches 12.91:1 on Workshop Sheet, 5.73:1 on Press Green, 4.84:1 on Stack Gray, and 10.29:1 on Clock Glass. Reserve Clock Glass for time labels and deadline details. Show each status as a column heading and repeat it on the job strip.

What to watch

The green, gray, cyan, and neutral surfaces do not form strong boundaries with one another. Give job strips, paper bins, and time chips a 2 px Ink Violet outline wherever they touch. Keep status words visible during drag and after drop, preserve keyboard movement between columns, and pair late or ready states with text and an icon rather than color alone.

A considered balance

Make room for
the right colors.

Apply Workshop Sheet to 50% of the board, Press Green to 30% of job strips, and Stack Gray to 20% of paper-bin panels. Keep Ink Violet as the foreground on Workshop Sheet at 12.91:1, Press Green at 5.73:1, Stack Gray at 4.84:1, and Clock Glass at 10.29:1. Use Clock Glass only for time and deadline details. Add a 2 px Ink Violet outline around job strips, paper bins, and time chips. Repeat Queued, Proof Review, and Ready in text on each moved item.

Start with a generous background, introduce your primary color, then use the highlight sparingly. The ratios are a guide for large surfaces, not a fixed recipe.

COLOR NOTE

Ink Violet passes normal and large AA on Workshop Sheet at 12.91:1, Press Green at 5.73:1, Stack Gray at 4.84:1, and Clock Glass at 10.29:1, so retain that original foreground on every surface. Press Green against Stack Gray is 1.18:1, Press Green against Clock Glass 1.80:1, Press Green against Workshop Sheet 2.25:1, Stack Gray against Clock Glass 2.13:1, Stack Gray against Workshop Sheet 2.67:1, and Clock Glass against Workshop Sheet 1.25:1. These fail the 3:1 non-text boundary threshold. Use a 2 px Ink Violet outline; it contrasts 5.73:1, 4.84:1, 10.29:1, and 12.91:1 with the respective surfaces. Do not use color alone for job status.

Text/background contrast: 12.91:1. This is one measured pair, not a guarantee for the whole palette. Check every actual text/background pairing against WCAG AA. Prefer readable combinations from the original colors, keep visible keyboard focus, and never communicate state through color alone. If no original pairing meets the requirement, propose a separately labeled derived color with its original HEX, proposed HEX, purpose and measured contrast. Never overwrite the source palette.

This guide preserves the original HEX values. Review the output before using it.
