One Voice in the Index

Test in Color Lab

Five colors, endless possibilities. Select a color to copy its HEX.

A minimal oral-history archive palette with a desaturated cyan index, pale transcript paper, dark blue-gray type, muted teal metadata, and one restrained violet waveform marker. Designed to keep attention on a single imagined recording.

The feeling

A quiet cyan archive centered on one transcript and one restrained waveform marker

Explore this palette ↓

The mood

Imagine an archive interface opening to one recorded voice and leaving everything else quiet. Quiet Cyan forms the index surface, Transcript Paper holds the spoken lines, and Archive Ink gives the words a steady reading rhythm. Index Teal marks dates and time positions without turning the page into a dashboard.

Waveform Violet appears only at the current passage, like a narrow marker beside the line being heard. The near-monochrome structure lets the imagined speaker card and transcript feel present without suggesting a real interview or collection.

How to use it

Use Quiet Cyan for the broad archive canvas and Archive Ink for navigation, headings, transcript text, dates, and speaker details on that surface. Place the active transcript inside a Transcript Paper panel. Index Teal can organize timestamps, inactive waveform bars, dividers, and compact metadata labels, while Waveform Violet identifies the playhead, current quote, or focused index entry.

Start with a 62/28/10 balance across the cyan background, pale transcript panel, and violet highlight. Let Archive Ink and Index Teal work as functional supporting colors. Keep one voice, one date, and one active waveform segment visually dominant at a time.

What to watch

Archive Ink measures about 9.33:1 on Quiet Cyan, 13.25:1 on Transcript Paper, and 5.44:1 on Index Teal, so those pairs support normal-size text. It reaches only 2.37:1 on Waveform Violet and fails even the 3:1 large-text threshold. If the violet marker needs a label, use Transcript Paper instead; that original palette pair measures about 5.59:1.

Do not use violet alone to communicate playback or focus; add a playhead shape, underline, or current-time label. Avoid repeating teal and violet markers on every line, because they would weaken the single-voice hierarchy and make the archive feel busier than intended.

A considered balance

Make room for
the right colors.

Use Quiet Cyan for the archive canvas, Archive Ink for interface and transcript text, Transcript Paper for the active reading panel, Index Teal for timestamps and inactive waveform bars, and Waveform Violet only for the current passage or focused entry. Put Transcript Paper text on violet whenever the marker requires wording.

Start with a generous background, introduce your primary color, then use the highlight sparingly. The ratios are a guide for large surfaces, not a fixed recipe.

Background · Primary · Highlight. Use text and accent colors where their roles call for them.

Text on background
9.33:1 #152935 on #B8D1D0 · AAA normal text
Text on primary
13.25:1 #152935 on #F2F1EB · AAA normal text
Text on highlight
2.37:1 #152935 on #665B75 · Not suitable for text

The original text has low contrast (2.37:1). This example uses Transcript Paper (#F2F1EB) from the same palette instead of #152935 on #665B75, improving contrast to 5.59:1. This meets WCAG AA for normal text.

Text on accent
5.44:1 #152935 on #7FA2A5 · AA normal text

Contrast is calculated for these specific pairs. Large text means at least 24 px regular or about 18.7 px bold. Check every pairing in your final design.

COLOR NOTE

Archive Ink on Waveform Violet measures only 2.37:1 and fails both normal- and large-text thresholds. Use Transcript Paper on Waveform Violet instead at about 5.59:1. Do not communicate playback, focus, or the current transcript line through violet alone; pair it with a playhead, underline, or text label.

Text/background contrast: 9.33:1. This is one measured pair, not a guarantee for the whole palette. Check every actual text/background pairing against WCAG AA. Prefer readable combinations from the original colors, keep visible keyboard focus, and never communicate state through color alone. If no original pairing meets the requirement, propose a separately labeled derived color with its original HEX, proposed HEX, purpose and measured contrast. Never overwrite the source palette.

This guide preserves the original HEX values. Review the output before using it.
